Recommended Gear for the Maine Coon

Snowy Ridge Maine Coons start all of our kittens on Royal Canin Kitten Dry Food. We supplement dry food with Fancy Feast Grilled or Pate. We recommend continuing use of the same food for the first few weeks of transition. After that, you may switch to another high quality kitten food or remain with Royal Canin Kitten food.

Cat Tree King has the best cat tree’s for Maine Coons. We have also been successful finding quality affordable cat trees on Wayfair and Chewy. Check out our top affordable cat tree choice. We use cat scratching posts in various parts of our home. This helps keep our cats from scratching up any furniture. We recommend this choice.

Cat/ Kitten Toys

In the first few months we recommend using a Non-clumping paper cat litter such as, Fresh News. We recommend this in an abundance of caution as young kittens may try to eat cat litter. Clumping litters can cause upset stomach or even blockages if ingested. Once your new kitten gets a bit older, we recommend switching to standard clumping litter. We use Fresh Step Clean Paws litter and the Litter-Robot 3 in multiple locations of our home. If purchasing a Litter Robot please use this link to get $25 off! Litter Robot

Litter Box/ Litter

As all cat owners know, a laser pointer can go a long way with entertaining a cat. We use a variety of small toys to include SmartyKat Hot Pursuit Cat Toy and even a little Catnip to keep our kittens entertained. The trick is making sure to keep a variety of toys available as cats will get bored if not introduced to something new.

Here is a list of some of our favorites:

Grooming

Maine Coons have beautifully thick, shaggy coats that are waterproof. They shed seasonally losing their thick undercoat in the summer, although some Maine Coons are known to shed all year long. The younger you acclimatize your kitty to grooming, the easier and more fun it'll be for the both of you. With a bit of training, you can make this a weekly treat for them. We like to use the following tools.

Water Fountain

We love our water fountains. A drinking fountain like the Pioneer Fountain Big Max re-circulates and filters the water, making it fresher-tasting and encouraging your cat to drink more. Because the water in a drinking fountain goes through a charcoal filter to remove odors and impurities, it is healthier for your cat than stale water that has been standing and collecting debris. After all Maine Coons love water so this makes a great addition to any home.
